Octopath Traveler was the first game to use the beautiful HD-2D art style that Square Enix's retro-style JRPGs are known for.
You don't have to play the first game, though. Even though the basic idea of Octopath Traveler 2 is to follow eight different travelers, all of the main characters are new.
Square Enix says, "It's a time of trade and industrial revolution when big ships sail busy sea routes, and new technologies are made possible by the power of steam."
Even though Octopath Traveler 2 follows the same basic idea, all the primary characters are new. You can jump into the second game and appreciate the environment and storylines it introduces.
Octopath Traveler employs the original game's Break and Boost mechanics. Turn-based strategic fighting where you earn Boost Points (BP).
Every character in Octopath Traveler 2 has two Path Actions — "one during the day, and one at night" — so you have more options.
This sequel is out on February 24, 2023. In September, developers told Famitsu the game was 90% complete.
