Entering the new millennia, Relic set the bar and gained popularity for its innovative work within the real-time strategy (RTS) genre.
In consequent years Bethesda received many awards and recognitions, including the laureate of the highest award of “The Best Developer” from IGN in 2006, thanks to the skillful creation of the unique game space and the ability to bring people the historically significant and exciting opportunities of strategic game developing.
Any recent release of Company of Heroes 3 specifically demonstrated how Relic is using advanced visuals, and in this regard, some of the most appealing graphs have been set in several strategy gaming genres.
But, among those voices of joy, the thunder of complaints could be heard from some of the old-school fans who found the difference from the original series.
This critique occurred in 2023 when there were also changes in the internal structure that led to changes in the composition of the workforce.
As such, Relic opted for autonomy to join forces with Emona Capital, to begin the journey of renewal…This provides the studio autonomy in positioning as well as unlocks creativity, and may also protect their key franchises like Company of Heroes in the process.
Relic’s action is indicative of a phenomenon that has recently taken shape in the gaming industry: studio acquisitions by other studios in an attempt to be liberated from large companies such as Sega, with which Relic was previously affiliated.
Although this shift may require some additional efforts towards specific outcomes, it holds the potential for more liberty in creative thinking and a positive future trajectory for innovation.

However, it is not smooth sailing from here as there are headwinds to battle. The massive dismissal of employees in the wake of the recent globally occurring corporate shake-up affecting thousands of game developers across the industry proves that the gaming industry is still unstable, which presents significant challenges to Relic as an independent company.
Nevertheless, the endeavor for autonomy granted in Relic’s case does indicate a clear determination on the part of the organization to determine its future.
With a diverse set of experiences in the history of innovation and a loyal base of followers, the studio is ready to lay down a new foundation of mastery in strategic planning. Time will only tell as to what Relic Entertainment has in store for this glamorous and daring attempt.
