Best PS5 Tips and Tricks in 2022

Turn off Controller Mic by default

It is worth noting that Sony did a lot of tweaks to the new PS5 Dual Sense Controller and it comes with features such as new Create button, adaptive triggers as well as haptic feedback.

The best part is that the controller now has a mic in-built so you don’t need an external mic to chat with other players.

However, there is a downside to this which is that the haptic feedback gets reduced when you chat using the DualSense Controller.

So most players prefer to turn off the Controller Mic as they have another Mic anyways.

In order to turn off controller mic by default, follow these steps:

PS5 Tips and Tricks
  • Go to Settings > Sound and change the ‘Microphone Status when logged in’ to ‘Mute’.

Now, every time you turn on the PS5, your controller mic will be muted by default so you don’t have to worry about turning it off every time.

Avoid Spoilers

Yes, you would be surprised to know that the PS5 has a cool feature where you can avoid spoilers from a friend of yours who just keeps on sending gameplay screenshots.

Game Spoilers are just as bad as movie spoilers because they just kill the excitement of playing the game to the next stage and not knowing what to expect.

In order to avoid spoilers, perform the steps mentioned below:

  • Go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
PS5 Tips and Tricks
  • Under ‘Spoiler Warnings’, change the status of warnings from ‘Only Spoilers identified by game developers’ to ‘Everything you haven’t seen’.

This means that not only spoilers identified by game developers but even screenshots from your friends will have a spoiler warning.

Save Storage Space on PS5

We know that storage space comes at a premium on the new PS5 and it also comes with a small SSD by default.

So in order to save storage space on your PS5, you need to do a few tweaks and tricks.

There must be a lot of PS4 Games on your PS5 because they are cross-compatible and this is where you can save storage.

You can just transfer the PS4 Games to an external hard disk in order to free up space from the internal SSD of your PS5.

Browse the Web on PS5

While the Sony PlayStation 5 does not have an in-built browser and you can’t install any external browser as well, we still have a trick with which you can browse the web on your PS5.

To do this, perform the following steps:

  • Go to Settings > Users and Accounts.
  • Under the ‘Link with Other Services’ option, select Twitter.

  • When the browser window loads up to let you sign into Twitter, click on the Twitter icon and go to the web.
  • After that, click on sign-in and use Twitter to open any links that you want to browse.

Now, it is not possible to type in any URL and browse the websites but it is possible to load up URLs which are available on your Twitter feed.

One trick here is to DM the link you want to open which could be anything such as ‘Google.com’ and that would be opened in your PS5.

Quick Shortcut to Go Home

There is a new UI on the PlayStation and while we like it, we also know people who don’t like it.

There are a few steps you need to take additionally in order to go home which involves going to the Control Centre then going to the home icon and then pressing the X button.

To make things simpler, we have an in-built shortcut for you to go home on the PS5.

  • Press and hold the PS button on your PS5 DualSense Controller and you will be taken directly to home.

This trick comes in very handy when you want to reach home as fast as you can and it could be a very cool party trick as well in order to impress your friends.

Switch between PS4 and PS5 versions of your game.

As we mentioned earlier, PlayStation 5 is cross-compatible with PS4 games which means that you can switch between the two versions while you are playing.

It is worth noting that the need for switching between PlayStation versions arises when you want to use your old DualSense controller which came with the PS4.

In order to switch between PS4 and PS5 versions of your game, do the following:

  • Select the game on your PS5 home screen and press the Options button on your controller.

  • Scroll down to Game Version and switch to PS4 to launch the PS4 version.
  • In this way, you can start playing the game in its PS4 version rather than the PS5 version while still playing it on the PS5 console.

Note that this only applies to games which are compatible with both the versions such as Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War as shown in the demonstration.

Customise Control Centre

In order to get the best out of your Control Centre and get all you need as per your usage, you need to customise the control centre.

To do this, you need to launch the Control Centre by pressing the PS button on your controller.

Then you need to press the Options button to get the customise screen option.

Now, pick the items you want in the Control Centre and remove those that you don’t want.

Mute all system sounds

We have mentioned earlier that you can mute your controller’s mic by pressing the mute button and you can even permanently disable the mic.

But did you know that it also acts as a universal mute button for all system sounds? Yes, that’s right.

If you press and hold the mute button on your PS5 Controller, it will mute all the system sounds of your console.

Many people find the system sounds annoying so for them, this could be a really cool trick.

Turn off Trophy Clips

In the previous section about how you can save space on your PS5, we mentioned moving your PS4 games to a harddisk.

Well, there is one more way in which you can save storage space if you are a trophy hunter.

You must have lots of videos of the moments when you unlocked trophies, it could quickly fill up storage space on your SSD.

See How long you have played a Game

Well, this one could be a really cool tip to see how long you played a game and spent(wasted) your time.

To do this, choose your Avatar at the top-right of your PS5 home screen and go to the Profile section and then the Games tab.

You will now see all the games you played along with gameplay time next to it and also how many trophies you have collected.

Save Power on your PS5

It is possible that you are playing a game on your console and suddenly there is urgent work that pops up and you want to go away for a while.

On a PC, we have sleep mode where the PC detects no activity and goes into sleep mode on its own.

Well, you can set the same on your PS5 as well.

Go to Settings > System > Power Saving and decide how long your PS5 should wait before it goes into Rest Mode.

Enable Automatic Updates on your PS5

In order to keep your console up to date, you need to install OTA or over-the-air updates that come to your console.

But it is usually not possible to keep the console updated as we don’t get the time.

So it should be the default behaviour to enable automatic updates on your PS5.

To do this, go to Settings > System > System Software > Update and Settings and enable Automatic Updates.

For Games, go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings and enable Automatic Updates.
